Bamboo, like wood, is a natural composite material with a high strength-to-weight ratio and is useful as a building material for various structures. The strength-to-weight ratio of bamboo is similar to that of timber and its strength is generally similar to a strong softwood or hardwood. However, it is more susceptible to decay than wood, due to its lack of natural toxins and its typically thin walls. Untreated bamboo can last 2-6 years indoors and less than a year if exposed to water. To protect bamboo from decay, two design principles are required: keeping it dry throughout its life and treating it to protect it from insects such as beetles and termites
